Teeth Grinding and Dental Implant Failure

There are several reasons that dental implants can fail, one of which is bruxism, otherwise known as tooth grinding. When you grind your teeth, which often occurs while you sleep, it puts excessive pressure on your jaw bone. This pressure could prevent the titanium screw, which is implanted into your jaw, from fusing with your natural jaw bone. If this occurs, the dental implant may not successful. In order to prevent this from occurring, your bruxism should be addressed prior to dental implant surgery.

Methods to Control Teeth Grinding

Every patient has a different reason for their grinding their teeth, as well as different methods that work in its treatment. A few of the most common choices include:

•  Finding ways to alleviate stress, such as yoga, Pilates, counseling, or meditation
•  Wearing a mouthguard during sleep to prevent the teeth and bones from experiencing damage at night
•  Fixing crooked teeth that may be causing bruxism
•  Creating a regular sleep pattern
•  Eliminating stimulants and depressants such as caffeine and alcohol from your diet

When you have bruxism under control, you will be a better candidate for dental implants. If you are already missing teeth, it is important to get help for your bruxism right away because the longer that you are without a tooth, the higher your risk is for bone loss, making it more difficult for dental implants to be an option for you in the future.
