Caring for Your Mouth after Scaling and Root Planing

Posted on 12/25/2015 by Dr. Wagle
A woman about to receive her scaling and root planning treatment. If you will be having deep scaling and root planing done on your teeth in order to remove plaque and tartar that is situated below the gum line, you'll need to properly care for your mouth after the procedure. It is common to experience slight pain and discomfort for several days following your appointment, and sensitivity to hot and cold can remain for up to six weeks.

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to assist in the healing of your mouth following scaling and root planing:

•  Rinse with a warm salt water solution to help with pain and swelling. You can also take mild over-the-counter pain medications like Tylenol or ibuprofen.
•  Use your toothbrush and floss in order to gently and thoroughly remove plaque from your teeth 2-3 times per day.
•  If prescribed Peridex, use it as directed. This mediated mouth rinse can reduce bleeding and inflammation, and it should be used once after breakfast and once immediately before bed.
•  If your tooth sensitivity does not begin to subside a few weeks after your procedure, consider using desensitizing products like sensitive teeth toothpaste, fluoride rinses, or prescription fluoride gels. These products should help to relieve your sensitivity to cold and hot temperatures.
•  Follow up with your periodontist about four to six weeks after your appointment in order to determine how well your teeth and gums have healed. You will likely need to follow up in another three months and continue to have regular dental checkups several times a year so that your progress can be easily monitored.

When you care for your teeth properly after deep scaling and root planing, you'll be able to enjoy the numerous benefits associated with the procedure. You should notice decreased inflammation and reduced bleeding of the gums, improving your overall comfort level.
