4 Periodontal Treatment Options that Don't Involve Surgery

Posted on 11/13/2015 by Dr. Wagle
A woman about to receiving a root planning and scaling treatment to avoid periodontal surgery. If you are living with periodontal disease, you may believe that surgery is the only way to treat the disease for good. However, when treating the disease, it is often the best course of action to first start with a non-surgical approach before moving on to more invasive treatment options. Your periodontist will likely discuss these potential periodontal treatment options that don't involve surgery.

Improved Oral Hygiene

Periodontal disease is typically caused by dental plaque, which can be removed with proper dental hygiene. You should be sure to keep up a good routine of brushing and flossing in order to remove plaque as it accumulates. Your periodontist can give you tips on how to best care for your mouth in order to treat gum disease.

Bite Adjustment

If you have loose teeth, they'll need protection from the stress of chewing and biting. Therefore, you may need to have a bite adjustment completed, such as braces or reshaping of the teeth. Neither of these treatments will require surgery.

Antibiotics
As gum disease gets worse, you will likely experience pockets in the gums and potential bone loss. In some cases, your periodontist may find it best to treat these difficult to reach places with an antibiotic. This treatment will only be used on a short-term basis, and antimicrobial rinses may also be beneficial in treating problems with the gums.

Root Planing and Scaling

These procedures will rid the gums and teeth of bacteria, which can become embedded into the root surface of your teeth. Root planing and scaling is a deep-cleaning process that will remove hard deposits and plaque from the teeth, both below and above the gum line before smoothing out the surfaces of the tooth roots. These steps will make it more difficult for bacteria to attach to the teeth and multiply.
