Is it Possible to get Implants in One Day?

Posted on 8/25/2015 by Dr. Wagle
A diagram of how a dental implant works.Have you heard about same day implants? You might think it sounds impossible - isn't the dental implant procedure, one that takes place over many months? How could a person get an implant in one day? The good news is that the procedure does exist for certain patients! It is a great option for those patients with dentures that are tired of the inconvenience yet do not want a full mouth of dental implants!

What are Same Day Implants?

Same day implants are also called All-on-4 Implants. These implants are to replace an entire arch, whether upper or lower, and are completed in one day. The procedure is done all at once so that when you wake up, you have a mouth full of new teeth. This takes the trauma out of having to lose all of your own teeth and the embarrassment of being without teeth while the implants heal, which is the case for standard dental implants.

All-on-4 Implants are dentures that are placed over just 4 implants in each jaw. The implants are strategically placed so that the overdentures are able to stay stable and secure for many years to come. This gives you an alternative to dentures which can slip or be embarrassing for patients to wear. Because of the decreased number of implants placed in the jaw, the patient does not have to undergo the extensive recovery period that would otherwise be required.

Lacking Bone?

If you were told that you have already suffered bone loss and are not a candidate for standard dental implants, the All-on-4 implants could be a good alternative. There is much less bone required for this procedure as there are only 4 implants per jaw as opposed to an implant for every tooth in your mouth. The implants will also help to promote further bone growth, which can halt the bone loss in its tracks and help you stay healthy as you age.

Who is a Good Candidate?
There are many people that would benefit from All-on-4 implants, but the most common patients include:

•  Patients with dentures that are tired of the slipping or experience discomfort from their dentures
•  Patients that want teeth that act like their natural teeth and do not have the risk of slipping
•  Patients that have suffered bone loss, or are at risk for bone loss
•  Patients that do not want to be bothered with traditional dentures

Qualifying for All-on-4 implants is much easier than standard implants. There is typically no need for bone or tissue grafting and the procedure is much less invasive. This means those patients that cannot undergo extensive surgical procedures may be a better candidate for this quicker procedure while still being able to benefit from a stable mouth that allows them to chew, talk, and smile with ease.

If you are at risk for losing your teeth or you already wear dentures, consider this tooth replacement option. It provides you with a more permanent structure in your mouth, which means you will be able to enjoy aging much better than you would if you had traditional dentures. Think about the ability to enjoy your favorite foods or to talk and laugh without worry that your dentures will slip. These are just a few of the advantages of this dental implant procedure.
