Does Scaling and Root Planing Hurt?

Posted on 3/10/2015 by Dr. Wagle
scaling and root planing is an important procedure and can be less painful than you might think! If the process of scaling and root planing makes you shiver, you are not alone. It is common to think of this procedure as downright painful, but the good news is that it is not! In fact, avoiding this procedure will end up being much more painful in the long run because it means you are letting your gum disease run rampant in your mouth, putting you at risk for more serious issues including tooth and bone loss. These issues will not only hurt your mouth, but also your self-confidence.

A Normal Procedure

We perform scaling and root planing on a regular basis and always ensure the comfort of our patients. Just as with any other dental procedure, scaling and root planing is done with the proper anesthesia to ensure your ultimate comfort. The scaling portion of this procedure is simply a deep cleaning of your teeth and its roots. It is the process of removing all plaque and bacteria from beneath the gum line that is putting your mouth at risk for gum disease. If the roots are inflamed or there are excessively decayed roots, the planing portion of the procedure allows us to remove the decay and infected roots and smooth out the remaining roots. You will not feel any of this procedure occurring and will remain comfortable throughout the entire time.

After the Procedure

After scaling and root planing you might be a little uncomfortable or more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures for a short amount of time. The discomfort is nothing that cannot be handled with ibuprofen and rest. In a short amount of time you will be back to your old self without the risk of gum disease running rampant throughout your mouth.
